Annapurna Base Camp Trek - Trip Information

The best time to plan for the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking is in spring and autumn. During spring-from the end of March to May-you find mild temperatures, clear skies, and a lush landscape. It gives the best trekking conditions in this season.

You will find the rhododendron bloomed in vibrant colors and views of the Annapurna range crystal clear, making it perfect weather to have an enjoyable trek.

Besides that, the season can also be autumn, which prevails from the end of September and goes up to November. During this season, the weather is stable, the air is crisp and the visibility is great.
The dry trails in this season receive minimal chances of rain, the views of the mountains are spectacular, and other than that, it is comfortable to trek. Both seasons are popular due to the pleasant weather conditions and spectacular sceneries.

Winter conditions prevail during the months of December, January and February, with their own challenges for Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The trails are filled with snow and ice, which makes trekking harder. However, winter treks provide the added advantage of clear skies and fewer crowds.

You should be prepared for colder temperatures and make sure you have the right gear to deal with the snow and ice if you decide to trek in winter.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek has considerable elevation gain and varied terrains. We start the trek at 1,400 meters elevation in Kathmandu, then drive to Pokhara at 833 meters. The trek actually starts from Jhinu, which stands at 1,780 meters elevation, ascending up to Sinuwa at 2,340 meters.

From Sinuwa, we again trek to Dovan at 2,500 meters and then to Deurali at 3,175 meters. This part of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek attains its highest altitude at Annapurna Base Camp itself, which rests at an altitude of 4,130 meters.

We face a pretty steep climb on this portion of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek because we are crossing highly varied landscapes; from green, rich forests to alpine terrains.

The return is done in a descent from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo at 2,310 meters, followed by a trek to Jhinu Danda at 1,780 meters, covering various distances each day.

The total distance covered on foot during the trek is more than 100 kilometers, and daily ascents are quite demanding but rich in experiences for an unforgettable impression of the Annapurna region.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is achievable for most trekkers, but it still presents moderate levels of difficulty because of the various terrains and considerable altitude gain.

It rises from 1,400 meters in Kathmandu to 4,130 meters at the Annapurna Base Camp. In that regard, the physical challenge results from a gradual rise through varied sceneries of dense forests, rugged trails, and alpine zones.

Altitude sickness may be one of the concerns on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek because of the height. As we go to a higher altitude, especially above 3,000 meters, the risk increases. Common symptoms include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. In order not to take these risks, we build in slow itinerary for the trek and remember to go slow and keep hydrated.

Proper acclimatization and preparation regarding altitude sickness are the keys to success for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. One will extensively increase the probability of a better trek experience by being able to reduce the chances of altitude sickness through walking at a constant pace, hydration, and listening to one’s body.

Distances and walking times vary each day during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The longest distance on the whole trek, about 16.7 km on Day 07, descends downhill from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo. This is the longest trek in hours, roughly take about 6 hours through diverse terrain, right from high altitude down to lower elevations.

In contrast, the shortest and easiest walking day is Day 09, when we drive back to Pokhara from Jhinu, where no trekking is required and a much-needed break from the exertions at the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

On average, we walk 5 to 7 hours per day, covering distances from 8.5 up to 16.7 km. The average amount of time ensures a balance in the trek and enables one to enjoy the wonderful scenery, besides acclimatizing with altitude gain.

Charging facilities are available at tea houses and lodges, especially in the lower and well-developed parts of Annapurna Base Camp Trek. You should expect to pay an extra money for these services that ranges between $200 and $400 per device.

The extra items like sockets, charging cable and adaptors are worth taking with you, as it is not guaranteed that they may be readily available along any of the trek routes.

From the perspective of internet access and communication, Annapurna Base Camp Trek is not that accessible. The network access is highly limited, especially when one goes higher in elevation.

You can buy a local Nepalese SIM card that may work for basic internet or phone services, but still, you are not assured of reliable network access.

Internet services may be available from tea houses or lodges, but availability and reliability vary. This may entail paying an extra NPR 100 to NPR 500 per day.

Accommodation provided on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek ranges between comfortable hotels and local warm lodges.

You will be accommodated in Kathmandu for 2 nights and in Pokhara for 2 nights at a 3-star hotel, on a sharing basis, with a complimentary breakfast. These tourist-standard hotels include modern amenities during your pre-trek and post-trek stay.

The tourist-standard hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara include modern amenities during your pre-trek and post-trek stay.

During the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you will be accommodated in twin-sharing rooms at the best available teahouses/lodges along the way. These hotels are moderately warm and welcoming, have warm beds, and blankets to keep you cozy during your sleeps.

Most of the lodges have shared bathrooms; they usually are in an eastern squat style. Bring your own toilet paper, as it may not be facilitated. Although the facilities are basic, they are well-maintained, offering cozy shelter after a day’s trek.

Accommodations during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek serve as a boon for trekkers in which comfort is mixed with natural beauty.

Your package includes Kathmandu and Pokhara in simple bed-and-breakfast accommodations that will help you start the day.

Three meals a day, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, will be provided during the time of the trek in your package. Any extra meal and snacks, not mentioned above, are to be paid for on your own.

Breakfast is a spread that tries to gear you up for the day. You will find an option for tea or coffee, porridge, muesli, oats, toast, pancakes, and lots of egg dishes. Tibetan bread is also available to make sure your trekking day gets off to a great start.

Lunch and dinner come with relatively varied choices. You could get Dal Bhat, a staple meal consisting of rice, lentils, and vegetables, Thukpa (noodle soup), Sherpa Stew, garlic soup, boiled potatoes, momos (a local type of dumpling), and even lasagna.

Though many of the Western kinds of food items, like pizzas and pastas, are available, the local dishes are highly recommended to be tried for authenticity.

The beverage options also range from soft drinks to alcoholic beverages. But the best option is to confine yourself to hot beverages like green tea, ginger tea, or garlic soup to avoid any problems with the stomach during the trekking and therefore to stay active throughout.
